The contest brought in some very interesting cases. The winner, Dr. Amy McGinness, of Black Creek Veterinary Hospital in Middleburg Florida won with her entry of a dog named Hooch. Dr. McGinness provided a radiograph of the 2 year old hound mix that had a stomach full of nails that were apparently left over from a fencing project his owners had completed the week before along with a photograph of the 309 nails Dr. McGinness removed during surgery!
Dr. Patricia Young of Steele Creek Animal Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, was one of two second place winners. Dr. Young submitted an x-ray of a 6 year old retriever mix, Hoss, who swallowed an old telephone cord! We are happy to report Hoss is doing well after a Gastronomy, intestinal resection and enterotomy was done.
Dr. Stephen Hart of Hidden Hills Animal Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida presented an x-ray of the abdomen of a 7 year old male Labrador retriever named Mousse. Dr. Hart found a 5 inch paring knife in Mousses abdomen! Dr. Hart was able to successfully repair Mousses perforated stomach and fistula which had formed.
The contest brought in many, many fascinating radiographs. We saw a number of things that a variety of animals managed to somehow digest including pricey wedding rings, a rubber duck and a toy dinosaur egg with a dinosaur inside! Milwaukee County Zoo even found an 8 inch squeaker in the gizzards of a penguin!
